As per the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), all new facilities will be constructed to achieve net zero energy use by January 1, 2030, and owners of existing commercial buildings will be required to upgrade their systems for higher efficiency within 20 years.

“Today’s facility managers face constant regulatory and financial pressures to lower energy use and improve the overall efficiency of facility operations,” said Duncan Curd. “Improving air quality and ensuring adequate humidity levels in health care and life sciences facilities can have tangible benefits for facility management, including improving the efficiency of the facilities’ HVAC systems and limiting the transmission of disease.”

Poor indoor air quality not only affects the happiness and wellbeing of staff, but can also result in costly losses to the business due to illness. Poor indoor air quality due to insufficient relative humidity levels (below 40% to 60%) creates the prime environment for dust and aerosol viral infections to flow freely through the air, affecting staff. This can cause a higher prevalence of staff health issues including allergy symptoms, sinus infections, headaches, and even respiratory issues. Ultimately, this results in lost productivity due to absenteeism and additional costs to the business in correlation with medical care.
