Condair and Corruven Implement an Eco-Friendly, Low-Cost Humidity Control Solution

Corruven Inc., a pioneer in composite materials technology, has been making great strides to deliver continued innovation since its inception in 2006. The founding idea being to create corrugated veneer panel using the natural strength of wood fibers.

For their dedicated research and development facility in Edmunston, New Brunswick, Corruven manufactures high-performance composites, which includes its patented Corruven technology that optimizes the natural strength of wood fibers to create corrugated veneer panels in an ecological friendly way. This patent permits Corruven to optimize the use of materials and shape it to achieve the very best strength-to-weigh performance. This technology is used in the company’s packaging, architecture, construction and furniture products.

As the manufacturing processes at Corruven involve heat applications and the physical properties of the materials used are affected by the relative humidity in the space, it became clear that an ecofriendly, cost-effective indoor humidity control solution was necessary. Arrangements were made with Condair to visit the site to assess the humidification needs and propose to design, supply and install the most appropriate humidification technology to meet their current and anticipated future demands.

“Given the size of our operation, traditional isothermal humidity control processes weren’t suitable,” says Eric Bossé, Corruven’s Director of Research and Development. “The solution had to be as performant and intuitive as the materials and products we handle every day.”

The research and development facility, at 100,000 square feet in size, simply could not be properly conditioned by traditional means, which meant that environmental instability could lead to complications with adhesives. This was only the beginning of a domino-effect chain of risks that could materialize without an effective solution.

“Our use of organic-based materials, primarily wood and paper, that are very sensitive to environmental conditions, in addition to our process involving heat applications, meant that our operations were at the mercy of damage caused by environmental complications. All this together meant that we needed to have a precise control of the humidity levels to insure consistency in our quality and process." Eric continued. "Without something that checked all these boxes while lowering consumption costs, our reputation for consistency would likely have been at risk"

Our Solution

Corruven maintains partnerships with international clients in the packaging and architectural sectors, particularly for ecological friendly corrugated materials incorporating wood fibres. As these materials – and subsequent relationships – are highly dependent on indoor conditions, the following three necessities were critical to the team:

● Environmentally friendly and economically cost effective operations

● Reduced material and/or product wastage

● Optimized operational performance and quality assurance

Since the installation, Eric Bossé and his team have noticed substantial improvements in all three of these areas.

Conclusion

“We’ve achieved a stable working environment with less downtime, which was critical since varying material properties required constant surveillance and process adjustments, quality is more consistent and productivity is much more predictable and stable.”

-Eric Bossé, Corruven’s Director of Research and Development
